E-residency – why would you need it?

Since 2014 Estonia offers digital identities for non-residents in order to enable access to many of the same e-services that were previously only available to persons living in Estonia. Foreign entrepreneurs have often many questions when they are suggested to apply for e-residency in order to manage their company. So, what is this e-residency about?

First, it is not about the right to live in Estonia. Quite the opposite, e-residency is made especially for people NOT living in Estonia. With an e-residency card, it is easier to do business in Estonia for non-residents.

The main point of the e-residency programme is to give non-residents the possibility to manage their businesses online without having to be physically present in Estonia and hassle with paperwork, notaries, etc. Thanks to this legislation Estonia is more approachable and attractive for foreigners. According to public statistics, there are now more than 63 000 Estonian e-residents living all over the world.

The e-residency programme is constantly being developed to be more user-friendly and efficient. The main benefits today are:

  • you can sign documents digitally (all types of agreements including employment contracts but excluding transactions of real estate);
  • you can incorporate and manage your company online;
  • you can declare your company’s taxes online.

So, when considering doing business in Estonia it is highly recommended to apply for your e-residency card in order to save time and keep the administrative costs low. Applications are made online and you can pick up your e-residency card at your nearest Estonian Embassy.
